Arrest of Fake Traffic Agent in Mexico City

The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City reported the arrest of a man who was impersonating a traffic agent in the Coyoacán borough. The individual, 26 years old, was arrested while collecting bribes from motorists at the intersection of Ermita Iztapalapa Avenue and Capricorn Street, in the Prado Churubusco neighborhood.

SSC officers assigned to the General Directorate of Internal Affairs were conducting supervision duties when they observed a subject in a uniform of the Undersecretariat of Traffic Control removing improperly parked vehicles. After a few minutes of surveillance, they noticed the man receiving cash from a citizen who left the area upon noticing the police presence.

Upon approaching to verify the situation, the man displayed a nervous attitude and could not present official identification proving he was an active member of the institution. During a preventive search, the officers seized a replica firearm and other items with official insignia.

The detainee was presented to the Public Ministry for the crime of usurpation of functions.
